Verified Data Engineer Insights — Institutional-Grade Data

Hey folks,

Posting on behalf of a friend:

She’s been working as an L4 Data Engineer at Amazon for ~2.5 years now and still hasn’t been promoted. Recently, her manager told her that she won’t be getting promoted this year either.

Another concern is compensation — she joined through campus hiring, and her current salary is significantly lower than what newer L4 hires are getting now.

She’s feeling pretty stuck and confused:

• Should she switch companies at this point? • Or wait it out for a promotion internally? • How’s the market right now for Data Engineers with ~2–3 YOE? 

The tricky part is — she actually likes working at Amazon (xD), so she’s also considering boomerang options:

• If she leaves now, is it realistic to come back later at a higher level (L5)? • What are the general policies or expectations around rejoining?
